Spring Missions Sunday at Phoenix First on April 12th

Phoenix First Church of the Nazarene Donates $2,600! to the ARM School Classrooms Bathroom Construction

"African Relief Ministries and it's leadership are working faithfully to bring dignity and worth to the displaced of South Sudan. Their vision of care for the orphans and widows in Gambela, Ethiopia is a significant undertaking that is making a world of difference. Because of the generosity of God's church around the world, hope is restored for children orphaned by war.

The passion and effort of Rev. Michael Gatkek to see this work accomplished is unparalleled. To see the smiles on the faces of those benefitting from not only having a home, but being able to attend class with desks and iPads is liberating. It was a great time sharing the missions update of A.R.M. with our Christian brothers and sisters at Phoenix First Church of the Nazarene this month on what’s to come next in Gambella. There was much joy during the presentation and I was excited to have my dear brother, George Matty and his wife Stephanie there with us this past Sunday as well.

For the last five years, this church has remained faithful to the mission of supporting A.R.M. orphans and widows of South Sudan. Helping come alongside us in this awesome endeavor with now more than 1,650 orphans and 20 classrooms is a commitment Pastor Josh is faithful to and has never changed over the years. His humbleness and love toward others helped bring these fundraising efforts and the next steps in building the latrines further along. The participation of the whole body of Christ and our Donors like you are what produces results during this crucial time of fundraising for the latest goals of the A.R.M. classrooms. Our dear friends at Phoenix First raised a generous $2,600, of the nearly $10K goal to help our Africa team complete the bathrooms and latrines project. We did not expect this great outcome and outpouring of support! Praise the Lord!

Dear Friends and Partners in Christ,

Greetings in the mighty name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I am writing to give you a current update on the war refugees. On July 10,2025, I had the opportunity to visit South Sudanese refugees currently displaced and living along the border between South Sudan and Ethiopia. The purpose of this visit was to assess their living conditions, especially in light of the delayed response from international agencies, including the United Nations (UN).

The situation on the ground there has become increasingly severe. Massive numbers of displaced and desperate Sudanese are still fleeing to the Ethiopian border in search of safety and in fear of losing their lives. They have been displaced from their homes, and tragically some have died. Millions of people are now living in temporary encampments without food, shelter, protection/security, or access to basic necessities.

Humanitarian needs are urgent and overwhelming! Widows, orphans, and vulnerable families are suffering without basic necessities such as food, clean water, shelter, and medical care.

We can only rely on our friends, partners, pastors of African Relief Ministries to urgently support us during this critical time. Fundraiser for Sewer System Underway

Have you ever dreamed about going to see the beautiful people of Gambela, Ethiopia to visit the orphans and meet the amazing African people in the new A.R.M. Center?! It IS affordable and now here's your time to join us this year!

GIVING TUESDAY: GLOBAL DAY OF GENOROSITY TO SUPPORT THE ORPHANS

Today is the Global Day of generosity , GIVING TUESDAY and we are pleased to announce our upcoming BVS Training coming up in January 2026 where we’ll take a Missions’ Team from the U.S. to the A.R.M Center in Gambella, Ethiopia to support the orphans’ and teachers’ there.

A.R.M is exploring the very exciting establishment of a small clinic at the A.R.M Center . This facility will offer essential medical attention to the orphans and serve the surrounding communities, too, as many of whom have limited access to healthcare services in town.

Urgent needs include new construction of proper latrines (sewer), development of a chapel center for prayer and counseling, and incentives for the 20 teachers and cooks supporting the orphans. Orphans also need uniforms and essential Classroom materials. Our Missions team will determine how we can strengthen our service and make an impact!

The State Governor of Gambella, Ethiopia, Mrs. Omod , will visit to witness the A.R.M. Center’s progress and offer her blessings. She will come to the African Relief Ministries center during our stay, where she will have the opportunity to observe and appreciate the work being carried out. Her presence will encourage and move the mission forward!

Goals Met!! Classroom Desks Gift Acknowledgement from Heart of Africa

Donation Gift of $17,500 Received from HEART OF AFRICA for Classroom Desks

Dear friend,

Good things are coming to our orphans at the ARM Center, all because of the generosity and goals met by you and Heart of Africa Ministries and their donors .

“Fulfilling the mission that God has placed with the Heart of Africa to help our African friends fulfill the God-given vision in practical ways is their mission,” says Hazel Seavey, Director of Director of Widows Ministries . "We're doing that with Tools, Tactics and Training, helping them help themselves is just one part of that to support these children long-term; not just for the 'Here and Now', tools to help the next generation!"

Since the grand opening of the orphans new School Building in Gambela this year, we've been awaiting for donors to give to the school's new classrooms for materials, daily meals, teachers salary support, Smartboxes software (which was also gifted by Heart of Africa), as well as necessary furniture items such as these desks. Last month their organization graciously awarded ARM with a huge donation of 350 desks for both students and teachers! "Addressing this urgent request has substantially impacted our school's community and contributes to a more effective and engaging educational experience. We want to acknowledge and say how grateful we are," says ARM executive director, Michael Gatkek.

Describing the impact the new classroom desks will have, Hazel says, "hungry stomachs have no ears. But also sitting at a desk where they can write and take notes while working on their new Smartboxes will also make a huge difference." Adding, "some of these orphaned children come from very difficult home situations; being able to come to school gives them encouragement to be able to learn and hope for more in a safe learning environment."

Every day it is our goal as Christians to trust God and say “Yes” to his will. It is the driving mission at ARM and helps us live out each day praying, supporting and providing hope and direction ~ being a voice to the orphans and widows in Gambela. Mission Team Update & New School Building Grand Opening❗

Pastoral Training in Gambella, Ethiopia for the Summer Mission Trip

Dear Friends & Ministry Partners,

Our mission team recently traveled this July of 2025 to Gambella, Ethiopia where we had the privilege of training 300 pastors from various denominations, with approximately 50% coming from the Church of the Nazarene. This year's theme was the Life of Christ . During the trip we witnessed Pastoral Training, and celebrated the Orphans’ achievements, including those at their Graduation of the Grand Opening of our New School Building we have worked so hard to build and fundraise with the guidance and help by you, our donors! Praise be to God and thank you!

Many of the participating pastors in the Gambella training included those of whom with limited formal education, and described the Pastoral training as one of the “best they have received and expressed a strong desire for ongoing training to help them minister more effectively to their congregations and surrounding communities.” Also distributed on the trip were 170 pairs of eyeglasses given to those pastors struggling to read their Bibles.

Brother Stephen Dak from the ARM Center was blessed by our team's visit, saying, " We extend our sincere appreciation to the West Texas District Church for their unwavering support of Rev. Michael Gatkek and his noble vision—caring for orphans and widows, and equipping pastors for effective ministry. Your partnership has played a critical role in advancing this mission." We firmly believe that one of the most impactful ways to share the Gospel is by equipping pastors who can, in turn, reach others with the message of our Lord Jesus Christ.

MISSION: GRAND OPENING CEREMONY FOR A.R.M. SCHOOL CHILDREN

We were so blessed to have visited displaced refugees from South Sudan, and what we witnessed was heartbreaking. Many live without sleeping nets or sufficient food supply and rely on ARM for support.

The intent of this year's trip was to celebrate a huge milestone - the Grand Opening of the orphans’ new school building and the event was attended by hundreds of community members and government officials! So far there have been 20 NEW classrooms built, and the orphans are overjoyed to finally have classrooms! However the school still does not have chairs or seating equipment (benches) which we are planning to purchase 350 seats. Each bench can seat 3 children and cost $50/ea. CLICK HERE to Donate

At the ceremony we were thrilled to welcome Dr. Simon Muon, the City Mayor of Gambella, Ethiopia , to the center of African Relief Ministries during the Grand Opening of the New School Building. This year we were excited to provide 10,000 copies of The Life of Jesus book additionally to our Pastoral team in Gambella during the event!! Many expressed their gratitude and praised God for those who made this possible!

We had the privilege of celebrating the Graduation of our Kindergarten Students to Grade 1 during our recent visit with the orphans in Gambella, Ethiopia. This achievement is a profound source of encouragement—not only for me, but also for the many Widows who are witnessing the academic progress of their children. It is a testament to the impact of consistent care, support, and investment in their futures. Beyond academics, we are reminded of a greater truth: these children represent the future of the Church.

Educational Program: Smart Box Software - Teachers Program

These powerful educational tools known as Smart Boxes were big Gifts to orphans this trip, thankfully granted to them by the Heart of Africa organization (led by Mike Henderson). These educational tools enable the children access to computers and engage with all their school materials, that are preloaded onto these devices. We are deeply grateful to God for the Heart of Africa ministry and their discipleship to support these vital resources for these children in their educational journeys during these challenging times. Their generosity is instrumental in helping the orphans pursue their academic goals and a brighter future!

Rescuing the Hurting, Hungry & Homeless

Gambella Ethiopia Vocational School and Theological College

New Vocational College Announced

Through these programs we have recently created, the Gambella Vocational School and Theological College aims to transform lives into long-term success stories, and provide graduates with the skills they need to thrive in the workforce.

We are committed to fostering a learning environment that nurtures both personal and professional growth, helping students build careers and secure their futures.

In Gambella, many young people spend their time idly (bored) without supervision, seeking shelter under trees or engaging in petty theft. A significant number of these Youth are heavily involved in criminal activities, with many joining gangs that have brought increased violence to the Region. This situation has created a troubling environment where violence and crime are becoming more prevalent.

We are committed to helping these young people break free from the cycle of poverty. In July 2024, a tragic incident occurred: a young man entered a family home, where he found a woman and her baby. The man violently attacked the woman, leaving her dead while allowing the children to flee. The baby was later found crying outside the house, while the mother lay lifeless inside.

This incident highlights the growing urgency of addressing the underlying issues in the region—poverty, lack of opportunities, and escalating violence.

2025 Nuer Peace Conference NCYPD Invitation of Rev. Gatkek Speaking & Announcements

Dear Friends & Partners of ARM,

It is with great honor that I was able to accept the invitation extended to me by the 2025 Nuer Christian Youth for Peace Development (NCYPD) Conference board, Elizabeth Nyayual Padiat, held February 17th to 24th in Ulang, South Sudan with efforts to promote peace and harmony in the region. The conference's goal was to bring together top leaders from various sectors to foster dialogue, unity and strategies for promoting peace within our African communities and beyond! It was a privilege to be invited there. I was selected as a spiritual leader in our community to speak and lead discussions to those in attendance. At the conference there were featured keynote speakers, panel discussions, and interactive peace-promoting sessions focusing on themes such as reconciliation, conflict resolution, and community building.

Also, for this year I am formally announcing the new board of directors for African Relief Ministries whose leadership and guidance will help shape the future of our mission. The newly elected boards members are as follows:

Urgent Appeal for Humanitarian Assistance for the Nuer Tribe in South Sudan

Dear Partners of African Relief Ministries,

am writing to inform you of the devastating situation currently unfolding in South Sudan , where the government is targeting the Nuer tribe. The government has been conducting night time bombings in areas where the Nuer communities reside, resulting in numerous casualties and widespread destruction.

In addition to the bombings, there are reports indicating that the government is using chemical weapons against the Nuer people, further exacerbating this terrible humanitarian crisis. This violence has led to a growing number of deaths, and countless individuals are suffering as a result of these atrocities. This is devastating.

In response, African Relief Ministries is actively working to provide humanitarian assistance to those affected by these attacks. We urgently request the support of individuals and organizations to join us in alleviating the suffering of the Nuer people during this critical time. Furthermore, we ask for your prayers, as the situation continues to worsen, and the need for compassion and intervention grows more urgent each day. We are truly grateful for each and every one of you who have stood beside ARM! Our new school is still in dire need of basic essentials for the new classrooms in our newly constructed ARM School Building. We are pleased to announce the intro of the Smart Box operation for our students, that's set up and ready for use. Our teachers believe these will significantly enhance the educational experience for many students! Heartfelt gratitude goes out to Heart of Africa for their generous donation of this essential resource!

For the children to be comfortable we desperately need to purchase 300 chairs; each chair cost is about $50. The total cost for all chairs is approximately $15,000. Would you consider sponsoring today to purchase one chair for every three students?

Additionally, a donation of $1,300 for each Classroom will finish 1 of the 20 classroom spaces needed (sized: 25 x 25 sq ft.) we have yet to complete in our Christian school. Right now as most of you know our nearly 1500 refugee children are studying in a make-shift tent with minimal school supplies. Our new building plans to equip them with tablets (smart boxes with curriculum), desks, printers, paper materials, chalkboards and visuals. A Call for Your Support to ARM Orphans

Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to express my heartfelt gratitude for your continued support, John Dodson and the team and involvement in African Relief Ministries’ mission to Gambella, Ethiopia this past July. Your dedication and encouragement have made a significant impact on the orphans, and your presence at the A.R.M. center provided much-needed hope not only to the children but also to the surrounding community and widows.

The needs of the orphans are ongoing, overwhelming, and we are currently focusing on two critical initiatives:

1. Building - the Orphanage School: To provide a stable and enriching educational environment

Pastor's Training - 2024 Mission Trip

Summer 2024 Pastoral Training with Hartford Texas Nazarene during Mission Trip

The mission team of A.R.M. this summer of 2024 was from Hartford visited Gambella, Ethiopia with the goal of Pastoral Training its Ministers. We truly thank God for opening this great door and these opportunities for many pastors to attend this amazing training. The training was eye-opening for many pastors who never had such a training experience before.

In attendance were 300 pastors from 24 denominations in Gambella Region who attended the training. It brought unity, peace and love amongst the various church's leaders. During our training in the second week of July, we provided these amazing pastors with delicious meals, neckties, and handed out certificates after their completion of the class.

For many years our team in the U.S. has been training pastors and equipping them for the church’s mission in both South Sudan and Ethiopia. The trainer this year is Rev. Ted Tailor who is well-qualified in his role as a Theologian. He was admired by all the pastors who attended the biblical training. Many pastors had never experienced this kind of training before, and we divided them into 7 groups and there was a vote from them to continue coming back with this style of Biblical training!

Pastor John, from the Presbyterian church suggested that, these trainings should continue throughout the year without a pause. He said that the Spirit of the Lord was to continue shining in South Sudan and Ethiopia and for these Mission Teams to keep coming back to Africa and provide more training to our dear pastor friends.

The theme of our pastoral training was, "How to Walk Through the Bible", where Pastor Ted prepared a rigorous and spirit-filled curriculum to train and prepare new and current pastors on how to Learn the Bible all the way through from Genesis to Revelation. It was an incredible training ~ one that will be remembered through Gambella, Ethiopia region since many pastors acknowledged it is one of the one best trainings that they've ever had before! We're so grateful for his team!

Our mission helped equip the region's community leaders and prepare them as Ambassadors of Christ in their churches and their communities. We give special thanks to Hartford First Church of the Nazarene under the leadership of Rev. Ted for sponsoring this special pastoral training.

These kids deserve a head start in life but many of them struggle each day with the need for the basic, essentials like food, water, clothing however that is what God almighty has tasked us at A.R.M. to help them with. ARM School Building Project Fundraiser 2024

Dumas Baptist Church Fundraiser for A.R.M. Center School Building Construction

Last month, our dear friends at the Dumas Baptist Church in Texas organized a Mission Sunday Fundraising event for the A.R.M. School Building Project for our orphans’ education. We're overjoyed to share with everyone the progress our organization has made since then.

While at the church, we had a great time sharing the vision and mission of A.R.M. with our Christian brothers and sisters on what’s to come next to support the programming on the ground in Gambella at the A.R.M. Center. There was much joy and momentum during the events with our friends!

For the last eight years the church group has stayed true to the "mission of supporting A.R.M. orphans and widows of South Sudan." My friend, dear Mr. Milton - former commissioner of Dumas, Texas also serves as an elder in the Baptist Church organizes his team on working on behalf of working for A.R.M. His endless participation and commitment has never changed over the years. His humbleness and love towards others helped bring this fundraising effort to success! The participation of the whole team helped produce successful results during this crucial time of fundraising for the latest A.R.M. School Building Construction Fund this year. We are grateful to announce that the Church Fundraiser during the Missions Sunday event raised $4,500 to help support the new building project!! We did not expect this generous outcome and say thank you to the entire church team.

Last year devastating rains destroyed the school huts and temporary buildings that our children and teachers relied on daily. After much prayer and consideration and the generosity of our beloved Donors, Partner Organizations and Donor Churches, and A.R.M. has invested the $30,000 of raised funds directly into the A.R.M. Center’s new School Building Construction Fund and began construction four months ago in February of 2024. Having our donors support is crucial during this time.

“We realize that education is critical in changing the course of any nation. The people of South Sudan will benefit from a well-educated community and as a way to give back to their people. African Relief Ministries finds itself in a unique position to be able to alter the course of history of its peoples through educating and empowering an entire generation of children,” says Pastor Todd Derbyshire, Senior Pastor of Crosspoint Church of the Nazarene and serves as supporting construction project manager helping advise A.R.M. engineers in the field in Gambella. “We currently have 1,400 orphans who are under the instruction of our committed and beloved teachers in the A.R.M. school program who are also mentoring them with support through the feeding program,” he added.

Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ,

Last week wrapped up a month-long mission trip from March 13 - April 11 where we had the privilege to travel to Gambella, Ethiopia to provide different services and support to the vulnerable orphans and widows. The trip went very well and I was delighted to see the orphans and spend time feeding the kids as they were very happy for the feeding program and the new classroom tools. Now, the school building construction project is in progress, and we have begun working with an engineer to accomplish this big goal. We'll be sharing more soon, so be on the lookout for details in our next update.

Those living in Gambella are truly blessed to have you in the U.S. come alongside them, praying daily, giving them support with your gifts out of the abundance of your heart! With every life touched this past month an even more awesome responsibility to help others' is our purpose. With more than 1,000 orphans in the A.R.M. First Half Progress Report from Gambella - 2024

Good News Friends! God has graciously blessed us with new successful fundraising platform and donor friends to help build our school building this coming year and this is a true blessing. I want to say thank you to all our generous donors for their continuing support to the orphans and willingness to help change many lives. The orphans in the ARM Center, this semester beginning in early 2024. The children have now taken their mid-term exams and they will be taking vacation for approximately one week in this period.

We are pleased to inform you that the poultry farm is operating efficiently and being managed on a daily basis by our staff to provide food for our community of orphans and widows. We now have 200 chickens in the poultry farm and we want to say a very special thank YOU and how much we appreciate those of you who participated in this project with us. The dozens of healthy chickens in the lots we finalized last year will be used for feeding our orphans in the program.

As you can see in the recent pictures shared by our staff in Gambella below, these impoverished widows are progressing every day and our ministry is improving their lives. This is because of your efforts to support ARM. This is all made possible by YOU, our donor support. We cannot THANK all of you enough!

Your prayers over them daily will be greatly appreciated!!! Please pray as I am going to be in Africa for the month bringing the necessary school materials and working with our partner, Heart of Africa. Ministry Evangelism Training in Dallas-Fort Worth January 5th & 6th

Greetings dear friends of ARM!

We’re joyful to report that during the first week of 2024, our Sudanese Nazarene Church leaders came together for ministry evangelism training in Dallas Fort Worth January 5 ^th and 6 ^th training with Sudanese Pastors on how they can reach lost people. The training was hosted by Fountain of Grace African Church of the Nazarene, and we all want to say thank you.

I am so honored to have my Sudanese church leaders join together and share their experiences with each other in the ministry and to learn from one another.
I want to humbly thank Dr. Mark for the gift of knowledge he has shared with his co-pastors in our ministry training during this 2-day intensive.

In the training, we had different South Sudanese tribes represented from the church of the Nazarene throughout Texas. The unity among the South Sudanese in the Church of the Nazarene makes our church unique!! Together we will overcome the trouble and divisions in our communities in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

My Sudanese brothers and sisters in our ministry, I also want to take this opportunity to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to help us. I am so grateful for your humble leadership and the dedication of each and every one of you to reach your surrounding communities with the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. (You know who you are!) May our Lord continue to bless you and guide you! May you have the strength to increase your ability to overcome those stumbling blocks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ!!!

As one unified body and Church, we are better together.

On behalf of A.R.M, I would like to thank you for your outstanding support to make this ministry strong to those in need over the past year.

As we are preparing for Christmas and the New Year during this advent season, I would like to say how much I appreciate your support and your willingness to be part of this ministry. On my behalf and on behalf of the ARM board, I would like to say I appreciate all that you have done to make this ministry strong for the hopeless orphans and the widows of South Sudan and Ethiopia. May this Christmas season bring joy and happiness to you and family. I am praying, too that your Christmas will be a blessed time and will feel the presence of the Savior's love!

One Widow Woman's Progress

Touching Success Story of a Widow's Vocation Testimony

This past spring season our ARM Center team captured the essence of our widow's program and we joyfully want to bring to you a business success story. The widow we are featuring and has participated in the last project is Nyachuol Yoal Lual, a 49 year old widow who was left with three daughters, two of whom are currently living with her in the Gambella Refugee Camp Number 3, whose husband died suddenly and tragically of a heart attack in April of 2019. The family are refugees from South Sudan and have lost all their belongings; and they were joyfully able to get the opportunity to fly to Ethiopia as refugees due to the conflict which erupted in South Sudan years previously. (Her family came through Jonglee Akoba).

When asked about her current situation, Nyachuol replied, “I've received 3000 birr ($ dollar) from the ARM widow’s micro finance initiative program in 2020, one week after my husband died. I have been given initial business training on how to manage my business produce and money. Then afterward I felt interested to invest in dura (grain) small business. I started making an assessment and start buying 15 sacks of Dura (grain) from other refugees who are in need of money. This is always during food “ration” receiving time. I brought 6 sacks with total expense of 2400 birr ($ dollar) in which 6 x 400 = 2,400 was used as my start up capital. I kept this in my store for almost one week waiting for what is so call punish time where all food in every household is finished. Then I resell one sack with 700 birr, which means 6 x 700 = 4200 birr as my actual top-up profit is 1800 birr."

“I am doing this to be able to provide for my family. I heard about this project when I am still considering ways to continue proceeding with this business for It is of course good to learn methods for investing and also found it useful to learn accounting skills and methods to calculate profits,” she concludes.

Her gratitude to our ARM staff is through her conclusion, “I also thought it was helpful that ARM staff members came to see us regularly to check on how we were making products and that they supported us in our sales activities. The [micro finance] project helped me develop an eye for selling, and to produce high quality goods myself, enabling me to sell my products for a slightly higher price than other people. This project really helped to improve the lives of many widows in this camps and may God bless ARM administration in Ethiopia!"

Children's School Progress - Summer & Fall Sessions

First Graduation Classes Update at ARM Children's Education Center

We're very thankful and celebrate our young students who have graduated their very first class from kindergarten, K5 and 1st grade last month from Nienkel Intl. School NIS. We are so grateful to be able to bring to you this great progress, and tell you more about the exciting orphans' progress all because of your commitment and support!

Today, we are in lack of so many resources that makes it possible for these orphaned children starting their '23 fall semester. One of those pressing needs this new school year are the school's materials like exercises and books, school uniforms and clothes, mats, blankets, and hygiene health kits.

Another deficiency our school is lacking is a robust feeding program so the kids keep nourished and have energy to study during the day. Do any of us truly know what it's like to be really, really hungry? Do any of us truly know what it's like to be really, really hungry? For many children in Gambella, Ethiopia unfortunately this is their everyday norm. If the rain washes out their crops, and the winds tear through the village then it makes it extremely difficult to provide adequate them food resources. Below, we are trusting God to work together for the good of these beautiful children who deserve the chance of an education and future. See the school needs below for the school year 2023-24.

Need for School Fees – When family resources are low, a family has to choose for one or two children to attend school while the others stay at home. Older children, orphans, and girls are most likely to be left out and cannot attend school. A sad reality.

Need for School Supplies – Many families cannot afford fees for their children's tuition, books, or uniforms. The orphans are being supplied by the support of our ministry/ partners. Exercises and books, school uniforms and clothes, mats, blankets, and hygiene and dignity kits.

Education Center Building Improvement – Younger children do not have the opportunity to attend school because their guardians do not feel that they are capable of learning at a young age. One of the biggest challenges these kids face is not having a school building, as the education building "shelter" the center currently have setup is only temporary. Recently two classes were destroyed by the adverse weather and the high wind conditions. We are now looking forward to building something much STRONGER that will give them hope. This is coming real soon and with your help before the end of this school year!

Health - Many of our kids always get sick being around large numbers of students, and by not having any health clinics to go to for a wellness check, some face serious illness and even death. Further, many orphans become malnourished due to the lack of food as mentioned above. One of our future goals is to provide our students with a health clinic for them. Meet Nyakoang: A Fish-Invested Widow with a Zealous Purpose

Nyakoang's Helping Young Widowed Women Sell Dried Fish

Ms. Nyakoang Gatkuoth Chang is a thriving widow at the A.R.M. Center who helps fellow widowed women invest in selling dried fish to earn a living. This determined 36-year-old widow's husband sadly was killed in the Malakal South Sudan Civil War in December of 2013. In order to survive, she fled the country as a refugee in early 2014 with her 5 small children in route to Ethiopia. A little bit about her children: 3 daughters and 2 sons all now living in a Gambella refugee camp. Her skillfulness and adept attitude are known to benefit her community. Read below to hear from her in own words the experience they suffered and learn a little bit more about her entrepreneurial experience and activities where she helps so many other widowed women!

“When I heard about the project from the Zonal Authority, I decided to participate thinking it would be a good opportunity to earn my own income. They gave me business skills training for 3 days and at last they give me my start-up cash of 3000 Birr equivalent to US $50. Then I started thinking of what kind of business is actually productive in the camp. In the beginning, I was able to effortlessly start buying dried fish from whole dried fish sellers. For example 1 dried fish is = 40 Birr from whole fish seller, therefore 50 x 40 = 2000 Birr which was used as my start-up capital and then sell it with 60 Birr in camp therefore 50 x 60 = 3000 Birr as my actual business profit. I found it is helpful that ARM came here to show us first-hand how to make small business. It really helped me learn sanitary drying methods."

She continues, "I also learned so much from visiting and cooperated with other business partners in different areas where I took part in trainings like commodities, store management and made a visit to a fish market in Lare village, where I am normally able to earn a handsome income during a good fishing season. I saved up enough money to purchase a shop where I can sell my produces instead to rent from other. Next I want to try making plan for other than dried fishes, and increase production so that I can afford to save my children and give them a good education," she says. Mission Trip Recap - Gambella, Ethiopia A.R.M. Center 2023

This year, the mission team of A.R.M. had the privilege to travel to Gambella, Ethiopia Africa to provide different services to the vulnerable orphans. We had 7 leaders on our mission trip who were all extremely talented with very different gifts and knowledge to provide to the orphans and widows during the two weeks in early 2023. There were numerous blessings and answers to prayer, and we felt like we were able to accomplish what God called us to do on this particular trip.

During our nearly two weeks in Gambella, we were able to provide a no-cost school program, Kindergarten through 7 ^th Grade with the essentials of education, physical fitness, and spiritual literacy and also to encourage them to share the love of Jesus and Biblical scripture memorization; seeing nearly 500 children and orphans who came each day , eager to enjoy activities and receive training! Our team witnessed nearly 1,000 orphans in attendance at our primary school that we set up for them again ranging from Grades K-7. These children came each day to receive a meal and we were able to accomplish it with our incredible team's support.

At the ARM Center, and during our time together, the mission team and staff took part in feeding programs and community to the orphans. A favorite part of the week was being able to personally present 61 widows with a microloan of $100/each, which we provided microfinance training to help these widows become self-sufficient - thanks in part to Pastor Hazel who passionately and experientially led these women in her training from the organization, Heart of Africa. Surprisingly on the final day of training, the class totaled an amazing 80 widows! Their purpose was to help these widows with *vision, personal value, identify their work skills and strengths, build relationships, mentor and work to heal trauma from being an "outcast" in society. We had the privilege during this time of blessing them and hearing their testimonies and appreciation for the loans. (*The loan/criteria was given to help them to start a business to learn to be self-sufficient. These widows had to be recommended by their home church pastors, coming from different denominations, and already had a project in mind that could become self-sustaining.)

In the Pastoral Leadership Training with Pastor Brian Troxell there were sermons including the Parable of the Tenants, "Jesus as the Chief Cornerstone" and His life, also the Passover. Overall, there were 250+ pastors from various tribes and different denominations in attendance who exhibited a general lack of understanding of scripture and foundational principles and it was necessary for them to receive our instruction. We issued certificates to all the pastors that came for the training. We were also able to give out over 100 pair of eye glasses (which, as you can imagine the chaos, excitement and awestruck feeling it created). The eyeglasses were donated by Lake Houston of the Nazarene for those who needed them on Monday.

Not only that great report, but we also provided trauma training so they can easily deal with their congregations going through many trauma levels due to current situation they are facing in the refugees’ camps. Some even followed the Lord, about 50, professing the Lord during this revival. He summarizes their awesome experience as, "It's a place where you have these ancient cultures colliding with modern technology. They live in huts and they have cell phones." It's hard to explain how bizarre the other side of the world is - he continues - there is a thin line between surviving and thriving. And, there is a message of transformation here and it has everything to do with helping hurting people. "How could we overlook an entire group of people, like widows?" he says. That was a reflection and observation while in Africa from this team. He goes on to say, "This is a message about 'digging people out of ditches' whatever the circumstances are, we are all just one step away from being in that ditch. What I am praying for is that we have eyes to see and then when we see, we'll have courage to do what the Spirit is leading us to," he concludes. On Sunday our team enjoyed fellowship with over 600 in attendance at the District Center with a very lively service which lasted from 9 to about 1p.m. led by Pastors Brian Troxell and Michael Gatkek and field ministers. We learned so much that day as we saw the joy, compassion that filled these brothers and sisters who had so very little in the way of material things. One of the highlights was during the offering time when almost all came to give what they had without reservation! There was singing and dancing which seemed to be the highlight of the week for everyone in the A.R.M. community.

The teachers training was a big success this year as well as the educational orphans training with leading teacher, George Matty and Jennifer, who lead the passionate teachers Both provided excellent training and instruction to their groups. The teachers’ training culminated with a dozen teachers receiving their certifications. Jennifer Wright, A.R.M. Missions Lead Teaching Instructor says, "God never ceases to amaze me with his goodness. This was my first trip to Africa and wow what a life-changing experience it was, making a life-lasting imprint on me! To see in person, the transformation of the teachers and students, as the week progressed, was incredible. They were all very grateful and demonstrated their gratitude with heartfelt verbal expressions of appreciation!"

She continues, grateful for the many gifts we raised funds from our friends, wisdom and knowledge shared to advance their ability to reach and teach the orphans. Our work has just begun! The needs are great but our God is greater she concludes! Additionally, we are now appealing to many of our dear brothers, sisters and partners like you, to come alongside us to join in the support of these dear Christian orphans and widows. It is true that children are future of our world, and when we help raise a child up in the Lord’s way, we’re promoting the liability of humanity. A.R.M is now helping many South Sudanese who lives in Gambella, Ethiopia as the refugees. Each day our staff provides different services to help spread the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Many South Sudanese orphans in the refugee community have little to no opportunities. They neither have any food or a place to sleep. Some of them have spent their nights on the streets - hungry, hurting and hopeless. It the vision of A.R.M to build a place for those kids and each time we return, our promise remains faithful. Committed to them for the purpose of having a hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). They have nowhere for their schooling and we can happily report that we’re in the process of raising funds to build a school for the orphaned kids. All part of our vision during this year's trip.

Mission Trip Training Makes Tremendous Impact!

Orphans Training Impact 2023 with George Matty, Teaching Pastor

On this year’s Mission Training Trip held in February 2023, George Matty, Chairman of the A.R.M. Board of Directors, was in charge of leading the orphans - teaching orphans about Adam and Eve and the temptations of sin in the Garden of Eden. The response from all of the children in the service couldn’t have been constructed better. “I was very surprised that dozens of the children had the story and Bible scriptures memorized before I taught my lesson,” says George. Others were excited to hear about the freedom and forgiveness of their sins and this brought about joy and praise and singing.

“It was very exciting to the teachers and the children to see missionaries from the U.S. caring and loving them. This will make a life-impacting change on them!” concludes George. This was an intense, fun-filled time of singing, prayer, and play - lasting all day long! Needless to say the kids were exhausted, all worn out and ready for the once per day meal our team and the widows helped cook and prepared for them. The caregivers, grandparents and community widows are actively involved in these precious children progress and path of learning. Having everyone involved in this process inspires them as you see their joyous attitudes (which our mission team witnessed firsthand)! In addition, we aim to help provide an education to hundreds of children and youth in the A.R.M. program; giving them space to discover and grow their potential!

Our children’s teachers, leaders and programs are devoted to cultivating and developing the children that go beyond their circumstances. In Gambella, Ethiopia and regions within this part of Africa, millions of children live in extreme poverty. For these children, basic education is essentially out of reach.

God never ceases to amaze me with his goodness, says Jennifer Wright, missions team lead teacher. This was my first trip to Africa and wow what a life changing experience it was! To see the transformation of the teachers and students as the week progressed was incredible; overall there was over a dozen teachers in attendance, and 20 graduated the program with a certificate (see below a few of their accomplishments). They were very grateful and demonstrated their gratitude with heart felt verbal expressions of appreciation. They were grateful for the many gifts, wisdom and knowledge shared to advance their ability to reach and teach the orphans. Our work has just begun. The needs are great among their widows and orphans community, but our God is greater!

West TX Nazarene District Recognizes South Sudanese Pastor

Assoc. Pastor Luke Lotara appointed lead pastor of Church of the Nazarene Mid-Cities African Community

Greetings!

We want to honor and give thanks and praise to our Lord for the latest appointment of our dear brother, Pastor Luke Lotara as lead pastor of Church of the Nazarene Mid-Cities African Community congregation earlier this month by Dr. David Downs. As part of the brethren, 6 years ago it was the stewardship of Pastor Michael and wife Elizabeth Gatkek who planted this church. Pastor Michael has also been directly involved and committed in Pastor Luke’s training; and Pastor Luke has been an exceptional associate pastor and received his Nazarene District license two Assemblies ago according to the WTX Nazarene newsletter. Standing together, Pastor Michael and his fellow assoc. pastor, Luke and Betty Lotara beside Dr. David Downs, West Texas District Superintendent.

We ask you to humbly pray blessings over Pastor Luke and his wife Betty's new Nazarene chruch minsitry in Ft. Worth and their life of this new congregation! May God bless you!

Flood Displacement in South Sudan

We are compelled to ask because of a temporary emergency issue unfolding in South Sudan. Many of us may not fully understand the needs of South Sudanese society right now. These photos below will give you the recent disaster activities and flood conditions those of our family located in the ARM Center. We are the voice for people like these South Sudanese affected by the flood and want to call on you, our ministry to be the hands and feet to help us.

As I looked at the pictures, I have learned that there were many more children affected by this disaster. I am now appealing to you brothers and sisters to extend your hand or any help you can to respond to the current flood situation that has affected our Christian brothers and sisters in South Sudan.
